Cosplayers play in Fighting Vipers tournament in 1995

A blast from the past popped up on YouTube as tournament coverage of Fighting Vipers appeared online. The video gained traction due to a tweet from video game historian Jon Anderson. It was part of a Japanese gaming show whose name is currently unknown. It featured people buying Dragon Quest VI on the SNES/Super Famicom, a preview of Street Fighter Alpha 2 and a Virtua Fighter 2 party! The main event was what most of us here at Mega Visions noticed: A Fighting Vipers tournament!

One of a few cosplayers that entered the tournament

It appeared to have a few cosplayers at the event. Most of them cosplayed as Honey (Candy for the international audience), with a random guy drenched in hair gel. (That was the 90’s, the bad boy with the hair cream that never dries.) If you wanted to see button mashing at it’s finest this is the video for you! At the time of this article being written, this is the oldest fighting game tournament coverage viewable online! This predates the predecessor of Evo, Battle By The Bay, by a single year!

Most of the tournament playable games are online in some compacity. Which game would you like to watch a top 8 of? Sound off in the comments below!!

We recently walked down memory lane with our own Retro Review of Fighting Vipers. Check it out!
