Capcom posts mysterious countdown timer

It’s the final countdown. Well, a countdown, at least. Specifically, one of the Capcom variety; the lovely people behind smashes like Monster Hunter and Street Fighter. They have numerous IPs marking milestones this year, including that latter beat-em-up classic – which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year – and zombie decimation sim Resident Evil. Fans of Resident Evil Village are clamoring for more info on the game’s potential upcoming DLC. That’s just one of several potential things Capcom could be on the precipice of announcing as part of this new marketing stunt.

Capcom on the clock

As Eurogamer reports, the legendary studio have put up a webpage consisting of nothing but an ominous, ever-ticking timer. What’s it counting down to? Nobody knows. The end of the world? The detonation of a secret bomb that will brainwash the entire populace into purchasing Capcom products? An elaborate way for Kenzo Tsujimoto to time his roast in the oven? Well, those are all possibles, I suppose – but it’s more likely to be an announcement of some kind relating to a game. The clock is set to end on Feb. 20 at 10 p.m. PT/1 a.m. ET (6 a.m. the next day for GMT paupers like myself), but until then it’s anyone’s guess.

The report notes that the timer’s conclusion synchronises precisely “with the season finale of Capcom’s Street Fighter Pro tour, which starts on Feb. 17,” so there are a few putting their money on the reveal being something Street Fighter related. While it could all be a wild coincidence, it’s not beyond the realm of imagination that Street Fighter 6 could be on the cards, a long awaited sixquel whose appearance would not be totally out of left field given Capcom’s general hyping of the property in recent months:

Oi, can someone move that massive 35? I can’t see the name of the series.

“There are, also, other things Capcom has confirmed to be in the pipeline that could be connected to the countdown timer,” adds the report, which sounds a bit like they’re covering their tracks in case they’re wildly off base and rile up the Street Fighter fanbase. That’s why we’re going to do the smart thing, pop open a can of fizz, and kick back and wait. Capcom’ll come to us when they’re ready. Got nothing but time.

You have to give the Big C credit, though; they sure know how to get folks talking. For the right reasons, that is. Like Activision in reverse.

What do you reckon the mysterious timer could be leading up to? Let us know!
