[Update] Amazon is cancelling Persona 5 pre-orders on PS4

Persona 5 is slated to release in the next couple weeks on the PlayStation 3 and PS4, and fans are already getting hot and bothered at the prospect of playing the next entry in the series.

But they might need to check their emails because we’ve learned that Amazon is apparently cancelling pre-orders for the regular steelbook and “Take Your Heart” editions for the PS4.

According to a post on NeoGAF, Amazon is mass cancelling these orders because the entire inventory they received has a major defect. There’s no information as to what exactly the defect is or if it also affects products other retailers have received.

Below is the exact email the poster received from Amazon:

Hello,

Due to delivery restrictions on your order #redacted, we won’t be able to send you Persona 5 – SteelBook Edition – PlayStation 4.

This is because this item contains regulated materials classified as dangerous goods and can not be delivered by Amazon. Although the amount of these substances in these products is usually quite limited, these products need to be transported in a certain way to ensure that they are handled with care.

Unfortunately, this means that we’re not able to ship your order and it has been canceled.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience and hope to see you again soon.

If you’ve pre-ordered a PS4 version, have you received an email from Amazon yet? We’ll be sure to update this post if we find additional information.

Update 1

We’ve seen reports that Best Buy orders are now being cancelled, too. 🙁

Update 2

According to a Reddit post, an Amazon customer service representative stated that the cancellation isn’t due to a defect but because the supplier had cancelled orders.

Update 3

Atlus has responded via their Facebook page:

This morning we were surprised to learn about Persona 5 “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition cancellations with Amazon. After waiting patiently during the day we received word, and can confirm to you what we’ve always known, that there’s nothing defective or “dangerous” about our product. While there have been cancellations, we understand that only a tiny number of Amazon sales have been affected. No “mass cancellations” of the premium and SteelBook editions have occurred. If your order has been cancelled, please contact the retailer for support.
