Alan Wake 2’s story is apparently huge

"This story is a monster... and monsters have many faces."

Like many of you, I was absolutely ecstatic to see the Alan Wake 2 trailer at last year’s Game Awards. The teaser promised a dark horror atmosphere and the return of the namesake protagonist, albeit a little more frightening than we last left him. And according to Sam Lake, the story of Alan Wake 2 is quite the long one.

A Tweet from the game’s director and co-writer Sam Lake revealed that Remedy is currently shooting scenes with the game’s cast of actors. Lake and other lead writer Clay Murphy have written a ton of pages for the story already. More than any other game they’ve done before, apparently. As Alan Wake himself said: “this story is a monster.”

Dissecting the monster of Alan Wake 2’s story

Since the game is still a ways away (it’s launching in 2023), we only have a few details right now. We know that Alan Wake 2 will take more of a survival horror bend than the last game, with some theorizing based on the trailer that Alan will be the villain this time.

The writers have confirmed a few things about the story, however. No knowledge of Alan Wake’s story will be necessary to understand the plot of Alan Wake 2. However, it will add to the backstory and thus it’s recommended that you do play that game first. It’s also not known how much this sequel will tie into the AWE DLC for Control where Alan Wake played a central role.

One thing’s for sure: it’s gonna be a monster of a story indeed.

What are you hoping to see in the story of Alan Wake 2? Are you as pumped for this game as I am? (Possibly!) Let us know!
