Remedy announces Alan Wake 2 at The Game Awards

Alan, wake up — the sequel to Remedy's beloved action horror game is on the way, and it looks scary as hell.

After years of rumors and fan-clamoring, Remedy Entertainment finally showed us a glimpse of the sequel to Alan Wake. The game, Alan Wake 2, received a terrifying announcement trailer at the Game Awards.

Following Remedy going public, releasing the AWE DLC campaign for Control which tied back into Alan Wake, and remastering the original game, fans knew that this announcement was inevitable. And if the trailer is anything to go by, Alan Wake 2 is going to scare the pants off of us.

Check out the (age-restricted) announcement trailer below, courtesy of Remedy Entertainment on YouTube.

A brief history of Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 has a bit of a storied history, beginning development shortly after the first game was released. In 2015, Polygon released a 13-minute gameplay reel of an internal prototype demo created by Remedy shortly after Alan Wake released. The demo showed off the moods and atmospheres Remedy hoped to highlight in the sequel, as well as some gameplay improvements.

Remedy would recycle many of these features for the spin-off Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. However, Alan Wake 2 never got off the ground past this demo.

Thanks to Microsoft owning the publishing rights, Remedy wasn’t able to get full creative control over the sequel. Plus, Microsoft was more interested in greenlighting the company’s other projects, like Quantum Break. After Remedy became a public company in 2017 and bought those rights from Microsoft, however, fans became hopeful that the sequel would finally step into the light.

Alan Wake 2 Trailer

What can we expect in the sequel?

As the teaser trailer implies, Alan Wake 2 is diving further into horror after the first game focused more on action. The game is a survival horror title set in the Remedy Connected Universe, which includes Alan Wake and Control. Remedy’s trailer showed off a number of environments as well, including some familiar locations — as well as some new ones bathed in a dark light.

Sam Lake, Creative Director at Remedy Entertainment, explained more about the game in a PlayStation blog post:

Whereas the first Alan Wake had horror elements in it, it was an action game. Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first survival horror game. Our take on the genre. Our opportunity to truly connect the gameplay and the story. It is a deep, layered mystery.

Alan Wake 2 is developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Epic Games. It will be released for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Epic Games Store in 2023.
