Affinity Sorrow is a new SEGA Genesis RPG on Kickstarter

A true 16-bit turn-based RPG adventure

Indie developers Second Dimension recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their latest project Affinity Sorrow.

The new game is a turn-based RPG that will release exclusively for SEGA Genesis. Affinity Sorrow takes heavy inspiration from classics like the early Final Fantasy games and the Mana series. The developers state their goal is to evoke the nostalgia of the 16-bit era with their own unique title.

Remember those old-school RPGs that you used to play until it was way past your bedtime and the console’s power supply was really hot? Well, that’s exactly what we are aiming to recreate in our own way.

What is Affinity Sorrow?

Affinity Sorrow follows the story of Nex, a young boy from the town of Fey. After the power of the Quadra Novis drains, the world of Tyrne plunges into chaos. As a result, Nex must leave his quiet isolated town and embark on an epic journey.

Meet the hero Nex!

As Nex adventures through the dangerous but beautiful world, he’ll encounter a variety of companions like Valeria the Mage and Pyrrk the Alchemist. Along with his companions, Nex grows as a hero and eventually discovers secrets that make him question his role in the world.

For gameplay, Second Dimension aims to both faithfully represent the classic RPG formula and also expand on it. To do this, the developers chose a few key features to balance in order to create the perfect turn-based RPG.

One of the main elements Second Dimension hopes to capture is a rich and engaging story. Since they began the project, the developers took their time to make the world of Tyrne feel alive through its different chapters, quests and character dialogue. Every element of Affinity Sorrow focuses on telling its story and expanding its lore.

Affinity Sorrow’s top-down gameplay

In addition, Second Dimension focused on creating a visual and audio aesthetic that aligns with their goals for the final product. Graphically, they want to capture the feel of top-down classics from the 16-bit era. For sound design, they wanted the music to not only match the aesthetic but also build on the narrative.

Another important gameplay element Second Dimension is determined to get right is combat. Affinity Sorrow will feature an engaging and easy-to-use turn-based combat system with a variety of options. Players can strategically choose between a large array of attacks and abilities to effectively take out enemies.

Crafting the Second Dimension of modern retro games

Second Dimension is no stranger to developing retro games. The indie studio has been developing and publishing video games for SEGA Genesis, NES and Super Nintendo since 2015. Their passion for retro gaming shines through in their work. In addition to Affinity Sorrow, the team is also responsible for the Castlevania-like Eyra the Crow Maiden.
