Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick had a ‘really cool vision’ for a new Guitar Hero

"I wanted to make a new Guitar Hero for a while."

The infamous Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has been in the headlines for months concerning misconduct lawsuits and claims directed at workplace culture. With the sudden Activision Blizzard and King acquisition from Microsoft, rumors have spread that he’ll be stepping down soon, but not before speaking on a “really cool vision” for the next Guitar Hero game in an interview with VentureBeat.

Kotick explained in the interview that he’s always had a soft spot for Guitar Hero. He had some ideas for a new entry to the franchise, but Activision lacked “the resources” to make it possible at the time:

“I had a really cool vision for what the next Guitar Hero would be, and realized we [didn’t] have the resources to do [it]. I wanted to make a new [entry] for a while, but I don’t want to add teams to do manufacturing and supply chain and QA for manufacturing. And the chip shortages are enormous. We didn’t really have the ability to do that.”

Due to the recent acquisition by Microsoft, though, a future for the IP might be possible. With the help of another big fan of the series: Phil Spencer. Already, Spencer has mentioned reviving long-forgotten IPs such as King’s Quest and Guitar Hero when both companies finally converge. Given his comments, Guitar Hero could very well live in the sun again, but it’s a wonder what type of game it’ll be!

Shredding the guitar to a banging soundtrack is cool, but I’m excited to see how far they can push it ahead as a full-packaged interactive experience!
