A lost, 90s SEGA VR game got resurrected on modern hardware

Back in the 90s, there were a number of companies who dabbled in virtual reality. Many remember the short lived Virtual Boy from Nintendo, that featured games in glorious red color. SEGA also tried to jump into the VR market, but their device never went into full production – it was only seen at tradeshows and marketing materials.

Some reasons for its cancellation included recommendations from the Stanford Research Institute, which warned of headaches, dizziness, and motion sickness, especially in younger kids.

Today, the Video Game History Foundation announced the first playable SEGA VR game on modern hardware. Dylan Mansfield, who works at preservationist group Gaming Alexandria, contacted the makers of one of SEGA VR’s games and got his hands on a fully intact copy.

Titled Nuclear Rush, this 1st person action game was shown off to the press in 1993’s Consumer Electronics Show. The Foundation goes into super specific detail on the history and findings of the game, which you can check out here. They even show you how to play the game on your own VR headset!

You can take a look at the game in action above and discuss with us in the comments below!
