9 Sols smashes new $9 million funding goal

Strap on those katanas and get ready to help Yi in his quest for vengeance. Red Candle Games announced Friday that 9 Sols has reached over $9 million NTD ($360,000 USD) in their crowdfunding campaign. As we have been updating our readers on this game’s progress, we are delights to share the news. Passing this stretch goal means more cutscenes in the game.

Not only has the campaign been an overwhelming success, but the development team also shared they will be a part of Steam Next Fest, set for this summer. In order for more players to enjoy the already stellar demo and possibly join the almost 6,500 backers, Red Candle Games has extended their campaign out until June 24.

The next goal is $12 million and will provide funding for an alternative ending. With no signs of slowing down, 9 Sols looks to be a smash hit, even before its official release. And the backer perks are definitely worth the price. We’ve broken those down previously, so be sure to check out our coverage.

A demo worth 9 sols

Personally, I’ve played the demo… or am still playing it. I found it to be a fantastic journey through a twisted universe where deceit and mystery surround our main character. Understanding some of the finer mechanics in battle and making split-second decisions requires skill and impeccable timing.

When Red Candle Games likens it to Hollow Knight, they’re not kidding around. Plan to spend some time figuring out what works for you. There are sections where simply dashing or jumping over your foes is the best route to go.And yet, I’ll admit I spent over an hour dying repeatedly in one area. However, I like the challenge and the way it makes me change up my playing style to complete an area. Keep in mind it is a demo, and we can expect changes in the future.

And if you are like me and enjoy different art styles, 9 Sols has it. From exploding enemies and headless bodies on conveyor belts, it doesn’t skimp on the detail. But there is beauty in the breakdown, so to speak. The color palette is simultaneously dreary and brilliant for each area of the game. There are references to ancient Taoist deities, and creatures that belong in Dust: An Elysian Tail.

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the music. A blend of cyberpunk and Oriental themes provided the perfect background for Yi’s hack and slashing ways. Headphones are recommended to get the full effect of the music and atmosphere.

You can download the demo now on 9 Sol’s Steam page.
