Why Demon’s Souls’ amazing visuals pressured Elden Ring’s developers

Though he remains impressed, the original Demon's Souls creator never played the remake.

FromSoftware‘s Hidetaka Miyazaki recently revealed that the Demon’s Souls PlayStation 5 remake added pressure to Elden Ring‘s graphics team.

In issue 367 of EDGE magazine, Miyazaki states that the visuals of the Demon’s Souls remake impacted Elden Ring‘s development. Miyazaki adds that FromSoftware traditionally places a lower emphasis on graphic. However, the stunning visuals created by Bluepoint Games’ remake of Demon’s Souls made Elden Ring‘s graphics a larger priority.

I’m pretty sure our graphics-creation staff felt that pressure more than anyone else. And not just with Elden Ring, but with all the games we make. Graphical fidelity is not something we put as the top priority.

Miyazaki goes on to mention that he feels apologetic towards the graphics team but appreciates their hard work.

So this is always an area where I feel a little bit apologetic towards my graphics team because I know they work extremely hard.

Miyazaki and the FromSoftware team are responsible for the original Demon’s Souls in 2009. Because of his involvement on the original game, however, Miyazaki states that he never played the remake. Though he remains impressed by its graphics, he believes he could never get the same enjoyment from the game as a new player.

About Elden Ring

The highly-anticipated Elden Ring is the latest game from legendary Dark Souls developer FromSoftware. The new game builds on the Souls formula by incorporating new mechanics to the familiar gameplay. The most talked-about new feature, horseback riding, will create new scenarios for players in both traversal and combat. In the same interview with EDGE, Miyazaki states that this feature, while encouraged, will also be optional.

Elden Ring releases on Feb. 25 for PS5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC. In addition, players who purchase the game on last-gen consoles can upgrade to current-gen for free.
