Calling all fans of the Valis series! The magical girl warrior franchise is celebrating its 35th anniversary in style. Limited Run Games has opened pre-orders for the Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection (also called Re:Birth) standard and collector’s editions(CE) on the Nintendo Switch.
The collection includes the first three games in the side-scroller platforming franchise. Valis follows Yuko Ahso, a high school girl tasked with driving back the forces of darkness from three evil kings in three realms, Earth, the Land of Spirits, and Dreamland. Wielding the Sword of Valis as the owner of a pure and perfectly balanced heart between yin and yang, Yuko faces diverse enemies in each outing, such as her own best friend Reiko who is bent on dating a demon king.
Developed by Wolf Team and published by Nippon Telenet Japan, the original games came out in the late 1980’s and early 90’s for PC. As the franchise grew, the games became available for the Super NES and SEGA Genesis. Complete and plus editions were released on Windows and included all titles up to Syd of Valis. Additionally, each port and re-release of Valis added something new to the games, many times as improvements over the original.

The Switch version by Edia is a reality thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign launched in June 2021. Both the standard and collector’s editions will feature an all-new appreciation mode, where players can sit back and enjoy the beautiful visuals and soundtrack. It also has English localization, the ability to save at any time and the constantly useful “rewind” function to correct mistakes.
