This SEGA Dreamcast gets transformed into a mighty, mini gaming PC

The SEGA Dreamcast dream lives on, in the form of a gaming PC. There have been many instances where classic video game consoles succumbed to metamorphosis and become a shiny new computer. One SEGA fan gutted their old Dreamcast, and fitted the shell with an AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4560G APU. Gone are the days of the 0.2GHz chip and 26MB of RAM, Mr. Dreamcast. Now you’re dealing with POWER.

The AMD Ryzen was attached to a Mini-STX ASRock motherboard. On top of that, the Dreamcast 2.0 includes 16GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR4 RAM running at 3,200MHz. Oh, and there’s also 3 SSDs for storage. Pretty nifty, right? To keep the case from melting in on itself, he used the NH-L9a CPU cooler from Noctua. You can check out the video of how he made the video above.

The controller ports were replaced with USB ports, so you can connect your fancy gaming controllers. Now, although the new SEGA Dreamcast has fancy new parts, you can still get the same feeling of putting a disc in the tray, like you did in 2000. Except this time, your disc reader is a new DVD drive. The final product features a blue button, lighting, and controller ports. If you look close at the device and in the video, you can tell the final product is a little rough around the edges.

Here’s his official console mod description:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650g with Vega GFX @ 2100 MHz
  • CPU cooler: Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 CPU cooler with Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM fan
  • Case fan: Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX
  • Board: ASRock X300M-STX
  • RAM: 2 x 8 GB Crucial Balistix SO-DIMM @ 3600 MHz
  • Infinity Fabric: @ 1800 MHz
  • Drives: 960 GB Corsair Force MP510 (M2) 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO (M2) 120 GB Samsung 830 (SATA) Matshita DVD-RAM UJ8C0 (SATA)

Despite some of the aesthetic choices, it’s still an impressive piece of work.
