The ‘Console Wars’ documentary comes out next week

In May 2014, Blake Harris released a fantastic book on the ‘Console Wars’ from the 1990s. It gave us an inside look into the cut-throat competition between SEGA and Nintendo. If you did not read his story about their battle for console supremacy, you’ll get your chance watch it next week.

The documentary, which was executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, features an assortment of interviews from SEGA and Nintendo’s past, including Tom Kalinske and Howard Phillips.

An Official Selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, Console Wars takes viewers back to 1990 when Sega, a fledgling arcade company, assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation.

Unfortunately, you can only watch it through CBS All Access. Unless you were already a fan of the Star Trek series, you’re going to need to shell out some extra streaming cash to watch this one.

Console Wars officially starts streaming September 23.
