Nintendo Switch had amazing sales in Japan last year

Xbox and PlayStation sales in Japan pale in comparison.

Data collected by Famitsu reveals that Nintendo sold 5.3 million Switch units in Japan last year.

The high quantity of Nintendo Switch sales prove dominance over their competitors Xbox and PlayStation in the Japanese market. In fact, Nintendo Switch sold five times as well as all other consoles combined. The total sales of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S and even Nintendo 3DS only amount to 1.1 million units.

Alone, PlayStation 5 only sold 942,798 total units in Japan. Whereas, Xbox Series X/S sold only a meager 95,598 units. Interestingly, PlayStation 4 even managed to outsell Xbox with 103,786 units. However, while the Xbox and PlayStation sales pale in comparison to Nintendo, both brands sold far better than in 2020. That year, PlayStation 5 sold 213,328 units, and Xbox Series X/S sold 29,433.

On the other hand, Nintendo Switch sales remained relatively similar throughout 2020 and 2021. In 2020, Nintendo ended the year with 5.1 total units sold. According to gamesindustry.biz, Switch’s popularity in Japan for 2020 can largely be attributed to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, Nintendo retained their dominance in 2021 thanks to popular launches like Monster Hunter Rise, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
