Sonic the Hedgehog breaks box office records for video game movies

The Sonic movie was officially released on Friday, and everyone here at Mega Visions enjoyed it immensely (Be sure to check out this week’s podcast on our movie discussion)! It seems like others felt the same way because the Sonic movie performed better than expected.

According to Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog broke a box office record; the largest box office debut of a video game movie ever. The previous king of the hill was last year’s Detective Pikachu. The Sonic movie earned $57 million domestically and over $100 million worldwide, with more cash flowing in from President’s Day we’re sure.

Sonic’s initial projection was a domestic debut of $41-47 million, so I’m sure this was a pleasant surprise for SEGA and fans alike. It’s definitely well deserved after the movie studio listened to fans and redesigned Sonic’s look in such a short time window. Kudos to them!
