Sonic Origins compilation was recently rated in Korea

The MIA Sonic compilation was not forgotten!

It’s been a while since we heard news of the Sonic Origins collection. Announced last May during the Sonic Central stream, the collection will include an HD compilation of five classic Sonic games. However, with the upcoming release of Sonic Frontiers dominating headlines, Origins seemed to disappear into a blue blur of nothingness.

Fortunately, thanks to The Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee, we have confirmation that SEGA didn’t abandon the project. Last night, one Twitter user discovered the retro Sonic collection received an “A” rating (equivalent to an ESRB rating of E) from the ratings board. In other words, the project is still moving forward.

Sonic Origins receives rating in Korea

For many retro Sonic fans, this news brings a huge sigh of relief. After all, only a few weeks ago, rumors circulated that SEGA significantly downsized the Sonic Origins development team. Add in a lack of news, and all signs seemed to point towards an inevitable cancellation.

Instead, the HD remasters of Sonic’s 16-bit masterpieces will still arrive, albeit probably not at the speed the Blue Blur is known for. With Sonic Frontiers on the way this year, SEGA seems determined to focus its priority on that title. After all, the expectations for an “open-zone” Sonic title promised to be the next-gen evolution for the franchise does raise the bar pretty high.

The future of Sonic

Either way, Sonic fans have a lot of new content to look forward to. Sonic Frontiers launches this holiday season for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Meanwhile, Sonic Origins, while without a release window, remains in development. The HD compilation features five classic titles from Sonic’s 16-bit days: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD.
