SEGA is about to release a Pokémon arcade game in Japan

Gotta catch 'em all in this new medal arcade game by SEGA!

Pokémon is one of Nintendo’s largest franchises. However, SEGA recently revealed a new medal arcade cabinet based on the beloved franchise. The new game is titled Pokémon Corogarena. A limited time location test will run at SEGA Makuhari in Chiba City starting Oct. 28.

The official website for the game details the game’s core mechanics. Players begin with the loveable Pikachu before rolling a digital die. The number rolled determines how many spaces Pikachu will move. Certain spaces, called Get Mode spots, offer the player the ability to catch new Pokémon.

The goal is to collect six Pokémon. Gathering a full party allows players to advance into Battle Mode. Players must then use their team of Pokémon to defeat a rival trainer. After winning the battle, the player advances to a roulette. The roulette gives players the chance to win medals. In addition, playing the roulette gives players the opportunity to encounter the legendary Mew and Mewtwo.

What is Corogarena?

Pokémon Corogarena is a medal arcade game. A medal game is a type of arcade cabinet widely popular in Japan due to gambling restrictions. To avoid requiring players to use real currency in arcade cabinets, companies introduced a system to exchange money for medals (tokens). SEGA began developing medal games in the early 1970s and continues making them today.

SEGA’s new game will be the newest addition to the Pokémon medal game lineup in Japanese arcades. Previously, Takara Tomy developed similar titles Pokémon Mezastar and Ga-Ole. Although there is currently no official release date, the game will have a location test at SEGA Makuhari starting Oct. 28 for a limited time. After release, the game will be exclusive to arcades in Japan.
