SEGA SuperGame suggests NFTs are the “future of gaming”

A statement that surprises no one.

Aren’t you excited to hear that one again? Unfortunately just because the rest of us are tired of hearing about NFTs doesn’t mean game companies are done talking about it. During an interview with SEGA’s executives and producers, SEGA discussed their SuperGame initiative and how NFTs and cloud gaming are the “future of gaming.”

SEGA SuperGame initiative

SEGA’s executives and producers began sharing details about the “SuperGame” initiative in an interview. SEGA vaguely revealed the SuperGame initiative last year, but only just began opening up on what that consists of. Executive Shuji Utsumi says SuperGame acts as a banner for future releases for “AAA titles that cross over SEGA’s comprehensive range of technologies” and will be part of a bigger five-year plan.”

Various games are in the works for the SuperGame initiative. According to SEGA, these titles aren’t necessarily related and could be quite different from one another. However, they’re meant to be “interactive titles that go beyond the traditional framework of games.”

The executives pointed out Twitch streaming as an example and how the market has changed because of it. “I think there is great potential in the relationship between people who play and watch games,” Utsumi notes.

Producer Masayoshi Kukuchi added on to how NFTs and cloud gaming ties into their project.

“It is a natural extension for the future of gaming that it will expand to involve new areas such as cloud gaming and NFTs. We are also developing SuperGame from the perspective of how far different games can be connected to each other.”

How exactly that works or what that means, they didn’t expand much more. It seems to me a lot of companies look at NFTs and see profit, thinking it could be useful. Given the recent problems with NFTs (as if there aren’t always problems) with games like Axie Infinity, who knows how a SEGA NFT project could go?

Who knows how it will progress?

While SEGA’s already expressed interest in NFTs, it’s still disappointing to see they’d like to keep moving forward with it. Interestingly enough, they stated earlier that they needed to “assess many things” regarding NFTs after many fans expressed backlash. We’ll have to see if that affects the SuperGame plan moving forward.
