SEGA, PlayStation join Summer Game Fest 2021; Weezer kicks off event

SEGA is really having a busy year. Last year, journalist Geoff Keighley worked with a number of developers to launch a 4 month, summer gaming extravaganza. Because E3 and Gamescom cancelled due to Covid-19, this gave companies like SEGA and PlayStation the opportunity to show off what they worked on. From May 2020 to August 2020, game companies participated in live streams.

At this event, we got first looks at games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. This year, Keighley and Amazon look to bring back the summer festival. For its run, they hired legendary rock band Weezer to kick off Summer Game Fest 2021. The band will ” debut a stream safe game soundtrack song before sending gaming fans and viewers into the free, all-digital festival of original programming, publisher live stream events and more.” There will even be a special showcase dedicated to indie devs!

This year Keighley and his event get to make it a “true spectacle”. This is what he had to say:

“The big lesson last year was that we were so restricted in what we could do, I couldn’t even leave home. This year we’re going to be able to do it on a soundstage, with a live show…We’ll have live guests with me, which is a big bonus.”

What’s a gaming event without other gaming developers, right? The lineup includes SEGA, Capcom, Blizzard, Devolver, Dotemu, and more. You can check out the full lineup here. Their inaugural event, Kick Off Live!, begins Thursday, June 10 at 11 a.m.
