SEGA plans to sell NFTs of its new and classic games this summer

SEGA Sammy has announced plans to begin selling NFT digital content for its new and classic video games this summer.

In an agreement with Double jump.tokyo, a blockchain application developer, SEGA Sammy said it would sell the digital assets of art, gameplay video and music from their popular new and classic IPs.

Additionally, the NFT rollout “will be the start of a sequential expansion into a variety of content, including IPs currently in development and new IPs to be released in the future. In the future, we will also explore ways to effectively utilize the NFT contents owned by users,” according to the press release.

SEGA said it also invested in an undisclosed amount of money in the company.

“The NFT market is growing rapidly and is expected to expand significantly in the future. The company already has a rich track record in the NFT market, and this investment will further strengthen the relationship between the two companies,” the press release read. “Through this initiative, we will accumulate knowledge on blockchain, promote aggressive business development that is not limited to NFT using blockchain technology, increase the possibilities of games, and create new inspiring experiences for users around the world.”

SEGA is yet another game company that has recently announced plans to utilize NFTs and blockchain technology. For instance, Square Enix and Double jump.tokyo announced plans to co-develop NFT content in March.

While we’re not exactly sure how SEGA will sell their NFT content, we just hope we can finally “own” a video of a loading screen from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006!
