Sakurai hints his next project is not in gaming

If there is any person in the gaming industry that needs a break, it’s Masahiro Sakurai. After six-plus years of continuous work on the Super Smash Bros. franchise, Sakurai finally completed development last year on Ultimate. You would think after all that time, the man would want to take a sabbatical, right? Apparently not.

In an interview with Famitsu, Sakurai revealed he’s working on something. And that it might not even be tied to gaming! In his words, he explained:

I have been away for a while now, but I am working on something. My eyes may be a little tired. You may see me in the near future in a place that has nothing to do with game production. You may or may not be able to see me. I hope to see you again in the future. Thank you very much for your time.

What could Sakurai be working on?

It seems weird to think about Sakurai working in any space other than gaming. But he’s earned the right to with his historic career. The amount he has done for the Super Smash Bros. franchise alone has given him cart blanch to enjoy whatever project he does next.

I have an honest guess; If you watched any of the development diaries Sakurai did for the DLC characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you know his gaming knowledge is impeccable! The amount of intelligence he has on gaming history, consoles, characters, and series is unmatched. It wouldn’t shock me to see him working on a comprehensive book on gaming history, Or even his own stories as a gamer growing up into one of the most influential developers in history. If that ends up being the case, I’m pre-ordering that book the first day you can.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch. What do you think Sakurai is working on next? Let us know below!
