Rockstar finally reveals that a new Grand Theft Auto game is in development

A community update confirmed that development is "well underway" at Rockstar Games.

After years of rumors, speculation, and anxious nail-biting from fans, Rockstar Games finally delivered the news we’ve been waiting to hear: a new title in the Grand Theft Auto series is in development. Details are sparse so far, though according to Rockstar, development is already “well underway.”

The announcement came via a GTA community post where Rockstar officially confirmed a new game in the long-running series. Whether it’s Grand Theft Auto 6 or not is unknown, and it may be a while before we find out.

We also learned that the next-next-gen ports of Grand Theft Auto V launch on March 15. The ports introduces features like 4K visuals and new graphics options, faster load times, 3D audio, and advanced haptic feedback. It will also include a new tutorial for Grand Theft Auto Online.

What we know about the new GTA game so far

You probably already know how much Rockstar has milked GTA V since 2013. As releasing GTA Online content is still profitable, it makes sense that Rockstar would focus on that rather than a new game. But after so much time, Rockstar finally decided to reassure fans that a sequel is in the works. Its official statement reads:

With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.

Rockstar hasn’t published any other details yet, with no word on a release window for the new GTA game. With GTA V’s launch on the PS5 and Series X/S, we likely won’t see the next entry for a while.
