About The Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe

Here’s all I have to say to anyone who calls themselves a retro gamer and hasn’t watched The Angry Video Game Nerd on YouTube: What were they thinking? Since 2006, James Rolfe has been producing videos for a series called Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN). In the videos, Rolfe, as The Nerd, plays some of the worst old school games ever made.

The Nerd

The Nerd’s hilarious reviews, imbued with some of the most creative combinations of swear words ever, made Rolfe’s AVGN series a cult success on YouTube. As his popularity grew, Rolfe (an aspiring filmmaker since childhood) even decided to make a feature-length movie based on the series.

However, as a YouTube series focused on video games, it only made sense to create a game based off it too. In came The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. The hilariously difficult game based off the iconic web series released for PC in 2013. Three years later, the team released the sequel.

In Cinemassacre’s mini-documentary, Rolfe and his partners explain the reasoning behind remaking both games for AVGN Deluxe. The primary reason was that lead developer Sam Beddoes improved his craft significantly between the two games. As a result, the concept was first to rebuild the first title using the sequel’s engine.

AVGN I & II Deluxe

Ultimately, however, the team opted to essentially rebuild both games from the ground up. The idea was to bundle both improved AVGN games together and make them available for all major platforms. The result, 2020’s AVGN Deluxe, introduces new features including enhanced graphics, an updated engine, improved level design and better difficulty settings. In addition, it adds a whole new chapter that’s unlocked after beating both games.

Until now, AVGN Deluxe was only available digitally. However, Screenwave Media just partnered with Limited Run Games to finally bring fans physical copies. You can pre-order AVGN I & II Deluxe now on Screenwave Media for $34.99.
