Popular Japanese Final Fantasy VI ROM hack gets an English translation

Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin released an English translation for the Japanese Final Fantasy VI T-Edition hack.

The dedication of ROM hackers never ceases to amaze. Through their efforts, they manage to both showcase their creative vision and keep long-forgotten retro games decades after they launch. Final Fantasy VI is no exception, with numerous ROM hacks designed to fix bugs, adjust character stats, and improve balance.

One Final Fantasy VI ROM hack that eluded English-speaking audiences for years, though, was Final Fantasy VI T-Edition by Tsushiy. The hack features new content (including quests, events, and bosses), re-balanced characters, and tons of cool bonuses for Final Fantasy fans.

Its Japanese-only release has prevented many Western players from fully experiencing what this hack has to offer. However, thanks to translator Clyde “Tomato” Mandelin, a full English patch of this ROM hack is now available.

What is this Final Fantasy VI ROM hack, anyway?

Final Fantasy VI T-Edition is a hack made by Tsushiy whose other FF modding credits includes a retelling of FF2 within FF4. With VI T-Edition, however, Tsushiy set out to create the ultimate version of FF6 with brand-new content, features like alternate costumes complete with alternate stats, and bug fixes. It remains a popular ROM hack in Japan, but couldn’t make quite a splash in the West without a translation.

That’s where Tomato comes in. He’s most famous for translating the Japan-exclusive Mother games and starting the Legends of Localization project. Now, using the GBA version’s script as a reference, Tomato has released a full English localization of this elusive hack.

This list of changes this hack brings is astonishing, to say the least. In addition to fixing numerous glitches and improving certain mechanics, Tsushiy has added so much new content that it almost feels like Final Fantasy VI Deluxe Edition. It’s safe to say that any Final Fantasy fan who hasn’t experienced this ROM hack needs to check it out.
