Overwatch Executive Producer Chacko Sonny is leaving Blizzard

Things continue to go from bad to worse for Activision/Blizzard. Our own Alicia Graves has done a fantastic job summing up all the legal trouble the company is in. It has rightfully been a horrible week for higher-ups and shareholders. They are looking towards new game releases to fan the flames of the backlash. That pathetic plan just got a lot harder for them!

According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Chacko Sonny has let employees know he is leaving Blizzard. Sonny is an executive producer on the Overwatch franchise and was working on the upcoming Overwatch 2. The departure is a massive blow to the development of Overwatch 2 as many Blizzard employees had high respect for Sonny. Schreier spoke to multiple employees who had this to say:

Several Blizzard employees, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk with the press, said Sonny was well-respected and that they weren’t aware of any allegations against him. Sonny was perceived as a stabilizing force on the Overwatch team following the departure of director Jeff Kaplan earlier this year, the people said.

Another massive hit to Activision Executives

I feel bad for the development team and everyone working in the Overwatch League. This whole mess has left the future of the franchise in serious question. I can’t blame Sonny for leaving either. The last couple of months have had to of been brutal to force him out. But this departure speaks to the bigger issue at hand at Activision/Blizzard. It wouldn’t shock me if executives were probably pushing for Overwatch 2 to release as soon as possible.

Overwatch was a massive commercial and critical success at release in 2016. The sequel could divert attention away from the lawsuits if fans love it. But it seems executives own actions have now thrown one of their biggest upcoming titles into limbo. Ironic, isn’t it? Stay tuned to MegaVisions for more updates on the Activision/Blizzard scandal.
