Night Trap ReVamped sneaks its way to Kickstarter

The shower scene is widely regarded as the “scene” that caused all the Night Trap controversy but was originally meant as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock and Psycho.

Night Trap, when it released on the SEGA CD in 1992, was incredibly controversial and even had congressional hearings that attempted to block the game from being sold. To this day, it remains one of the most controversial games to ever appear on a SEGA console, and a group of the original developers are hoping to kickstart an HD version of the game.

“The ability of computers and gaming platforms to display richly vibrant and full-res video has finally caught up with the vision we had almost thirty years ago of what full-motion-video products ought to look like: interactive television which, despite all the promises, has never arrived,” the Kickstarter project reads.

If the project successfully reaches its $330,000 goal, Night Trap ReVamped will be releases in full 1080p. For $20, backers can get a physical version of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Mac and PC by April 2015. Night Trap LLC plans on releasing physical copies of the game, which will have a very limited run, and an eventual port to mobile platforms.

“The $330,000 we are seeking is enough to cover the coding, manufacturing and fulfillment of the rewards we are offering,” the project continued. “If we raise additional sums, our intention is to acquire the rights to as many other Digital Pictures’ titles as possible and release them as well. We are also considering the creation of Night Trap II, although hopefully we will come up with a more clever title.”

When Digital Pictures announced the Mac and PC versions of the game, they launched this ad campaign, which poked fun at their critics in Washington. Backers can also get a signed poster of this campaign through Kickstarter.

Noticeably absent from the list of planned platforms is Nintendo. According to Night Trap LLC, there will be no versions of the game released on Nintendo platforms and for good reason.

“Howard Lincoln, the former president of Nintendo US, made our lives miserable during the 1994 Senate Hearings on Video Game Violence. Not only did he quietly suggest to congressman, though the use of Nintendo-supplied and heavily edited footage, that they should demonize Night Trap rather than Nintendo’s Mortal Combat [sic], but he also declared publicly that Night Trap would never appear on a Nintendo system,” read the project’s FAQ. “And he was right: as much as Nintendo desperately needs publishers to support their third-place platform, we won’t be one of them. There’s just too much bad blood between us and them.”

Take that Nintendo, bitches!
