Metroid Dread gets free update with a brutal new mode

In the latest Nintendo Direct, Metroid Dread was showcased to be getting a free update! If you’ve played the game, you might want to sit down for the information on this update. You can now download two free new modes for the game. A one-hit death mode called Dread Mode difficulty and a new rookie mode for first-time players that’ll give you more energy per life. There will also be a boss rush mode coming to the game later in a free update. You can check out the announcement tweet below, along with a trailer.

Look. I’ve beaten Metroid Dread. I’m very proud that I have because it’s a punishing game. The idea of playing through it where one hit is a kill is NIGHTMARE-inducing! Who would subject themselves to that? Speedrunners? OK sure. A casual player like myself? No, thank you! But I will try the boss rush. That seems like it will be easy to conquer! It’s also wonderful to see the rookie mode added for first-time Metroid players!

Metroid Dread is available now for the Nintendo Switch. If you want to see the rest of the Nintendo Direct, you can do so here! Are you thinking about being a masochist and trying the new Dread difficulty? Let us know below!
