Konami is shutting down Super Bomberman R Online

One of my favorite guilty pleasure titles in the last year has been Super Bomberman R Online. The blue bomber got the battle royale treatment to excellent results, in my opinion! It’s a game that helps me relax by playing a couple rounds, and I can’t wait to play it for years to come. Wait? What do you mean Konami is shutting it down?

Yes, it seems like it’s bad news for fans like me. Konami has confirmed that servers for the game will shut down on December 1st, just 18 months after release. What a kick in the teeth. But fret not, Bomberman fans! According to Konami, new Bomberman projects are in the works.

“The Bomberman series is moving forward with new projects. We hope to be able to inform you of this project soon. Thank you for your continued support of the Bomberman series.”

Boy, can’t wait for this to be more pachinko machines! Honestly, it does stink the game is online-only and there isn’t a local multiplayer option. The fundamentals for what makes Bomberman fun with others are in R Online. I hope they use this as a stepping stone to a grander project and not make something that’s a blatant money grab. Always have to put that caveat in for Konami.

Super Bomberman R Online is available for free on PS4/PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia. What do you think is coming next project-wise for the series? Are you sad to see the game shut down so fast? Let us know in the comments below.
