John Cena kept asking Nintendo for a 2D Metroid

Despite being most well-known for being a WWE superstar, John Cena seems to always be popping up in unexpected places. Aside from wrestling, rapping, and acting, it seems this professional also enjoys video games. Notably, he’s a Metroid fan, as he’s been asking Nintendo for a 2D Metroid since 2017.

John Cena really wanted Metroid

Giant Bomb creative director and former WWE producer Dan Ryckert made a tweet regarding John Cena’s interest in Metroid. During a photoshoot for Nintendo’s “Unexpected Places” Switch advertisement back in 2017, Cena reportedly told Nintendo reps about his desire for a 2D Metroid. Well, not only did his dream come true with the release of Metroid Dread in October 2021, but they also sent him a copy. Representatives of Cena thanked Nintendo in an email, telling them “John loves it.”

Former Nintendo staff member Krysta Yang backed up Ryckert’s tweet, writing “he did say how much of a Metroid fan he was. He’s a really nice guy!” along with a photo of herself next to Cena.

He’s a video game fan

The WWE superstar has expressed an enjoyment for video games in previous years. Back in 2008, he praised old school-classic Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. He also promo’d various games such as Madden, Baseball Stars, and Tecmo Bowl. Why do these games interest him? They’re what he stands for: “building a huge army and destroying a lot of shit,” Cena said.

It’s always charming to see even celebrities enjoy video games. Other people such as Henry Cavill are unashamedly video game fans. Cavill, who you certainly know for his role as Geralt of Rivia in the Witcher Netflix show, has mentioned he’s a huge fan of the very show he’s in. He even released a “How To Build A Superman Gaming PC” video.

Whether it’s John Cena or Henry Cavill praising games, we’re happy to see games in the mainstream spotlight. Maybe Nintendo will continue to make Cena happy with future Metroid titles.
