PlayStation CEO confirms Sony will acquire more studios

If you thought Sony was done acquiring studios after Bungie, not even close. In an interview with GameIndustryBiz, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan was blunt when asked about acquiring other studios down the line. He explained:

“We should absolutely expect more. We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go.”

That’s pretty matter of fact. And it should be. As much as Sony wants to focus on first-party development, gathering new studios is now a part of that strategy. Microsoft has consolidated the market by buying up multiple studios. Those acquisitions have made Game Pass and the Xbox brand more and more enticing to gamers by the day. Sony can’t ignore it anymore. The rumors of them working on a Game Pass competitor show they know that. They need to acquire studios as well to compete.

The next question for Sony is the juicy part for the gaming community. What studio do they go get to leverage the playing field? Sony and Square Enix have always had a great relationship? Could they pull a seismic punch and acquire the publisher to get first-party rights to Final Fantasy? Or is the time perfect to go and make a deal with Konami? Fans still wish that every rumor about a new Silent Hill game was reality. So it would be a massive victory to get the IP in-house and finally give the community what they want.

The possibilities for Sony are endless. And I think we will start seeing their acquisition labors manifesting more and more over the next couple of months. Stay tuned daily to MegaVisions for any breaking news on this topic in the future!
