Everything we know about Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles so far

It might seem weird as an anime fan to say this, but SEGA (not Bandai Namco) is preparing for the release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on Oct. 15, 2021. The smash-hit manga series is riding a wave of popularity after a successful first anime season and the stunning worldwide success of the film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

It seems like perfect timing to release a game on the series, and fans are excited! You might be someone that thinks the game looks great, but you have NO clue what this series is about. Fret not! We’re here to help by giving you a synopsis on the series with no major spoilers, and what we know so far about the game!

What is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba?

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba follows protagonist Tanjiro Kamado. He’s on a quest to find the demon who killed his family and transformed his sister, Nezuko, into a demon. After his family’s death and sister’s transformation, Tanjiro heads with her to join the Demon Slayer Corps.

Along the way, he trains to pass the trials necessary to join the corps. They also meet a mentor that hypnotizes Nezuko to suppress her demon urges and help her brother in their journey. The duo also meets other demon slayers in training that become close allies like Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira.

Together with the guidance of the top eight members of the Demon Slayer Corps, all four embark on a journey to find the head demon of the world to destroy the demons for good and hopefully change Nezuko back to a human.

Ok that’s cool, but what about the game?

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is being developed by CyberConnect 2. Their goal is to make the game a 3D arena fighter. The studio has handled anime fighters before with the Naruto: Ultimate Storm series and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, so the experience in this type of game is there.

CyberConnect 2 has already confirmed that story mode will cover season one of the anime and the movie Mugen Train. It also will have boss battles and cutscenes based on pivotal moments and fights in the show.

The roster at launch will consist of 18 characters, including six that appeared in the spin-off anime Chuukou Ikkan!! Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari. Local and online versus mode will incorporate two on two team battles. There has been no word on any potential DLC yet post-launch. But we’ll keep you updated on any future news.

Are pre-orders open?

If you like to pre-order your games physically or digitally, good news! SEGA already opened pre-orders in July that is still available for all consoles!
