Gynoug, the classic Genesis shoot ’em up, gets a rerelease for modern consoles

Ratalaika Games is bringing Gynoug (also known as Wings of Wor) to the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

Yet another retro shooter from Masaya Games is coming back from the dead. Publisher Ratalaika Games is releasing Gynoug, the classic dark fantasy shoot ’em up game, for modern consoles later this November. The shooter will be available internationally for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Known as Wings of Wor in North America, Gynoug remained a SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis exclusive until coming to the Japanese Wii Virtual Console in 2008. Now, audiences across the globe can dive back into this grotesque fantasy shmup once again.

This rerelease contains several new accessibility features, rewind and save state functionality, and a new CRT filter. It will launch on Nov. 12.

Gynoug Gameplay

Everything you need to know about the Gynoug rerelease

Originally released for the Mega Drive in 1991, Gynoug is a dark fantasy shooter taking place after the Middle Ages. Players take control of Wor, an angel sent to destroy the demon army led by a mysterious being known simply as the Destroyer. You must blast through six challenging levels to defeat the demon threat and stop the Destroyer from laying siege to the world.

In addition to the classic shmup gameplay, players also have access to new accessibility modes to help make the experience smoother for newcomers. Rewinding and save states have been added as well, letting you retry difficult sections without fear of getting a Game Over. Of course, what Gynoug is perhaps most remembered for is its terrifying graphics, especially the boss sprites. Being able to see those horrific machinations in HD is certainly a treat for veterans of the game.

This isn’t the first SEGA title Ratalaika Games has resurrected. Just recently, the publisher released the Japan-exclusive Gleylancer, another Masaya shooter, to modern consoles. Here’s hoping they’re working on bringing over even more of the SEGA library to keep them alive.

Gynoug is developed by Mayasa Games and published by Ratalaika Games. It will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on Nov. 12.
