F-Zero X races onto Switch Online tomorrow

The classic Nintendo 64 futuristic racing game originally launched in 1998.

Start your engines: F-Zero X is heading onto Nintendo Switch Online. Beginning on March 11 (which is tomorrow!), you can head back into the Blue Falcon and reach blistering speeds on futuristic race tracks once again. Owners of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack will have access to this title at no additional charge.

The second entry in the beloved racing series originally launched for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. And while it’s not exactly the new game that fans were hoping for, it’s at least a port of a fantastic N64 racer that will give it a new audience.

Everything you need to know about F-Zero X on Switch Online

F-Zero X retains the same high-octane racing gameplay of its predecessor, the 1990 Super Nintendo game F-Zero (also available on Switch Online). This was the first game in the series created in 3D, allowing the designers to go even wilder with the track design — integrating loops and tubes into the field. Critics lauded it at the time for maintaining a consistent framerate despite the high-speed action, made possible thanks to the admittedly simple graphics.

It still holds up today thanks to its simple controls and thrilling gameplay — an essential title to check out even if you’ve never played an F-Zero game before. The game looks fantastic running on Switch hardware, and Nintendo’s even added support for online multiplayer where up to four players can race simultaneously. It’s also a great way to tithe us over until Nintendo finally makes the announcement of a new F-Zero game. (We can still hope, right?)

Are you gonna be playing F-Zero X on Switch Online this weekend? What other games are you hoping Nintendo brings to the service? Let us know!
