Everything we know about Harmony The Fall of Reverie

Experience Harmony: The Fall of Reverie this month!

It is the very near future… a very simple gaming trope to explain cool new technology. Our hero, Polly, returns home after a few years abroad searching for her missing mother. Her hometown has drastically changed. The mega-corporation MK is using its power to control the population, endangering her entire community.

Polly soon discovers that she is clairvoyance and this power connects her to (and here’s where it gets a little weird) ‘Reverie,’ which is the realm of the ‘Aspirations of Humanity’: Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth. In this world, Polly becomes Harmony, a goddess who has the power to choose the Aspiration that will ultimately rule over Reverie and restore the delicate balance between that deities’ world and hers.

With the fate of humanity at stake, to which destiny will you choose to aspire?

Multiple Butterfly Effects

That’s the set-up for Paris and Montreal based developer Don’t Nod’s new choice based mystery game. Text based games started the computer game genre and have grown considerably since their inception. As Polly, or her Reverie based alter-ego Harmony, each choice or action you take will affect both worlds and send you down splintering and spiraling narrative paths.

The game will apparently give players the ability to ‘see into the future’ and explore the consequences of possible choices using a mechanic called the Augural. This game board will be a visual representation of Polly’s gift of foresight.

In addition, whichever destiny you choose to pursue will also allow the opportunity to obtain crystals from the Aspirations. These unlock different paths at important crossroads and change how the thread of the story unravels. Which, when you’re ultimately dealing with the fate of humanity, seems important.

Personality shapes worlds

Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth are all wildly different beings with their own distinct personalities, goals, and opinions on how the world should ultimately work. Players will get to know each of them as Harmony visits Reverie. An interesting twist to the storytelling is that Polly, existing in our world, will have to use her insight to decide what the world needs.

The driving force of the game will be deciding which Aspiration you want to eventually lead Reverie. As Harmony you’ll help this entity become the heart of humanity. The entity’s personality and style of rule will change Reverie while also giving the people of our world new directions as well. The production company states “When the link between worlds is stronger, Reverie has a bigger influence on the state of our world.”

This seems to suggest that you can possibly wind up with SIX incredibly different worlds, based on you choices. This would imply that the replay-ability of the game is rather high.

Music and art set the stage

The game boasts an enchanting soundtrack by award-winning composer, Lena Raine, who’s had some work in Minecraft and Guild Wars 2. The artistic direction that is bright, vibrant, and futuristic. The developer invited players to immerse themselves in the daily life of a Mediterranean city. The colorful situations, and fully voiced and animated cast of characters are designed to really take the world to another level.

The big thing about choice-based games is, are there enough choices? Once you’ve done it once, is there enough variety for multiple play-throughs, which can make the game worth the price. Harmony: The Fall of Reverie does seem to offer enough variety that it could be played many times over without experiencing too much repetition. The early visuals have an anime-type feel without seeming like a carbon copy of what came before.

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie launches this month!

The game is slated to be released on multiple platforms including the Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It launches on June 8.
