Everything we know about Evil Dead: The Game

Killing Deadites with your friends has never been groovier.

In 1981, filmmaker Sam Raimi unleashed the first entry to one of the most beloved cult horror franchises of all time The Evil Dead. Since then, the film sparked two sequels, a television series and even a decent remake. Over the years, the Evil Dead franchise became synonymous with its over-the-top campy violence.

Evil Dead Regeneration

Also, unlike most horror films, Evil Dead stands out for being more associated with the hero than the villain. Bruce Campbell’s charming portrayal of Ash Williams is the lifeblood of the franchise. With his fun one-liners in addition to his unique arsenal of a shotgun and chainsaw-hand, Evil Dead’s protagonist became a fan-favorite for the horror genre.

As a result, Evil Dead arguably has more ingredients for a successful video game adaptation than any other horror franchise. So, it’s no surprise that it did in fact have multiple tie-in games for PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. However, ever since 2005’s hack-and-slash Evil Dead Regeneration, there have been no new games for the IP.

That is… until now.

Opening the Necronomicon

Ever since Dead by Daylight took off in 2016, the asymmetric multiplayer genre skyrocketed in popularity within the horror gaming niche. In addition, the game’s inclusion of characters like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers, along with Gun Interactive’s Friday the 13th tie-in game opened the door for similar titles to follow.

Now, Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games are bringing the asymmetric multiplayer formula to the cult-classic Evil Dead franchise. Although the game was originally set to release this month, its release has since been postponed to May 13, 2022. So, as we eagerly await the dead to rise later this year, here’s everything we know about Evil Dead: The Game.

Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive first revealed Evil Dead: The Game during The Game Awards 2020. The cinematic announcement trailer narrated by Bruce Campbell equally excited fans of the film franchise and horror game fans alike. The trailer also showed early gameplay footage that highlighted very fluid shooting and melee attacks.

In addition, the developers announced the game would feature multiplayer-centric gameplay, centered around co-op and PvP action. The trailer ends with the release window of 2021.

Evil Dead: The Game puts a twist on asymmetric multiplayer horror

Throughout 2021, the developers kept fans updated on the game’s status. The first big update came during last year’s E3. There, they showcased the first major gameplay trailer.

Evil Dead: The Game First Gameplay Trailer

The gameplay trailer highlighted the core functions of the asymmetric multiplayer game. Players can choose to play as Ash and his allies and work together to defeat Deadites using the characters’ signature moves and weapons. To win, players need to work together to collect pages of the Necronomicon and other artifacts. After players gather enough materials, they can perform a spell to send the Kandarian demon and evil Deadites back to where they came from.

For more villainous players, you can also choose to take on the role of the evil Kandarian demon itself. Using its horrifying powers, including possession, your goal is to stop the heroes dead in their tracks. No matter which side you choose, you’ll get to play at iconic locations from the film.

Hail to the king, baby

As we know, players will have the ability to control their favorite characters from the films and television series. Better yet, however, is that the original actors will reprise their roles to voice their counterparts in-game.

Well hello, Mr. Fancy Pants

In addition to Bruce Campbell returning as Ash Williams, the list of characters whose actors will return includes:

  • Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly
  • Ray Santiago as Pablo
  • Ellen Sandweiss as Cheryl
  • Hal Delrich as Scotty
  • Betsy Baker as Linda
  • Theresa Tilly as Shelly

Delaying the dead

Although the game was originally set to launch in 2021, the developers ultimately pushed it back. To further polish the game, as well as implement extra features, Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive ultimately chose to delay its release to 2022. One of the new features is the inclusion of a single-player mode.

Solo content for Evil Dead: The Game will play similarly to its multiplayer, only with AI taking the place of people. In addition, there will be a few different side missions that players can play by themselves. However, it’s worth noting that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, as Evil Dead’s single-player content takes a backseat to the multiplayer.

With further polishing and the implementation of the limited single-player mode, Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive sought a February 2022 release window. However, the team once again opted to delay its release further. The new confirmed release date is May 13, 2022.

Evil Dead: The Game’s second postponement

Come Get Some!

On May 6, the makers of Evil Dead: The Game revealed the game’s official anthem Come Get Some. Partnering with Wu-Tang Clan original Method Man and legendary producer STATIK SELEKTAH, the song honors everything Evil Dead.

The music sampled in the song’s beat all comes directly from Joseph LoDuca’s original score from the 1981 movie. In addition, Come Get Some features multiple voice samples from Bruce Campbell himself as Ash Williams. Along with lyrics packed full of Evil Dead references, including a shoutout to legendary director Sam Rami, the song is the perfect banger to slay Deadites.

Alongside Method Man, Come Get Some also features verses from two members of the next generation of Wu-Tang Clan. Both Method Man’s son PXWER and U-God’s son iNTeLL of 2nd Generation Wu get some time to shine on this truly amazing track.

Come Get Some is now available to listen to on all major music streaming platforms. In addition, Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive will feature the song in the game’s official launch trailer on May 13. You can also listen to it yourself below by watching the official lyric video!
