Doom ray tracing is here… and it’s awesome!

Slay evil in classic Doom with devilishly good lighting!

Modder sultim_t uploaded a video on April 1 that showcases a new ray tracing mod for classic Doom. And no, it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke. This enhanced Doom mod is the real deal!

The video cuts between gameplay footage that compares the shooter’s original lighting to the beefed up ray traced version. The improvements are beyond impressive and add a layer to Doom’s gritty aesthetic, but with more flash and detail. But don’t just take my word for it. You can watch the video for yourself below!

What you need to know about Doom ray tracing

To create a dynamic lighting system, sultim_t used the PrBoom source port. The modder then applied the ray tracing to the first three chapters of the game. Whether you’re past the whole “ray tracing improves everything” trend or not, you can’t deny the results for Doom are devilishly great.

You can play Doom with ray tracing by downloading the mod here! Unfortunately, however, the modded shooter is only playable for PCs with NVIDIA GPUs. Currently, the ray tracing mod does not support AMD video cards.

To download the mod, you’ll need the original Doom.wad file and the PrBoom source port. After that, you’ll be ready to slay your way through classic Doom like never before!

sultim_t brings ray tracing to classic shooters

It’s evident sultim_t loves improving lighting effects for classic shooters. Earlier this year, the creator also added ray tracing to Valve masterpiece Half Life. The creator also worked on a similar project for Serious Sam. With sultim_t’s dedication to the craft, it’s likely we’ll see even more classic shooters get the ray traced treatment.

How do you think id Software’s classic first-person shooter looks with ray tracing? What other retro games would you like sultim_t to add ray tracing to? Let us know below!
