Check out this awesome demo of NiGHTS into Dreams running on Unity

Programmer Andreas Scholl has recreated Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams with Unity based on a data mining project.

While the Christmas season is now officially over, there’s still plenty of gifts left to unwrap for SEGA fans. One such present is a fan-made demo of NiGHTS into Dreams running in Unity 3D. Using actual assets pulled from the SEGA Saturn game, programmer Andreas Scholl has recreated the Christmas demo in the engine.

This demo is the result of a massive NiGHTS into Dreams data mining project. Scholl has been working to comb through these assets alongside a number of other programmers and data miners. This demo represents a huge turning point in this project as it’s the first major example of a NiGHTS level being recreated in another engine with original assets.

Recreating NiGHTS into Dreams in Unity

Scholl ‘s demo uses the original Saturn game’s assets ripped from the Christmas demo Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams. It features Claris running around the map, complete with snow effect and music accompaniment. Although the demo only runs for 51 seconds, it’s enough of a teaser to demonstrate how well the game could look in this new engine.

You’re already more than familiar with this map and gameplay if you’ve played Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams before. What’s awesome is seeing it run at a higher framerate with no draw distance. That’s the power of Unity at work, and it’s gotten people interested to see a full remake of the game using the engine.

Scholl has also dug into the rest of the game to uncover hidden and undiscovered elements. He revealed some previously undiscovered models, including beta NiGHTS heads and environmental assets. See those below:

This isn’t the first SEGA fan project of Scholl’s that uses Unity, however. Previously, he made a Unity remake of the SEGA Saturn shooter Burning Rangers which looks absolutely incredible. This latest project shows great potential for a full remake of NiGHTS in Unity — we’ll just have to wait and see!
