Crystal Dynamics now controls Tomb Raider and more big games

Eidos-Montreal also regained the rights to some of its most popular titles!

On Monday, Crystal Dynamics announced on its website that it now officially owns multiple game franchises including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain.

The new move follows former IP owner Square Enix’s decision in May to sell Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montreal to Embracer Group. The large media company, formerly known as Nordic Games, owns the rights to numerous other studios including THQ Nordic and Saber Interactive. Following its recent acquisition of these previous Square Enix-owned studios, fans wondered what the future would hold for some of the major game franchises.

As of this week, fans now have a promising answer. Embracer Group seemingly let the game IPs fall back into the hands of their respective developers. In the official announcement, Crystal Dynamics confirms their ownership.

We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited. As a result of this change, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliate) is now the owner of these games and the controller of the gameplay and personal data related to them.

Additionally, Eidos-Montreal also confirmed the rights to some of its notable games also returned home. In the studio’s recently-updated terms of service on its website, it confirms the official ownership of both Deus Ex and Thief.

For fans, this news certainly appears hopeful, as it implies that Embracer Group has faith in the studios to maintain creative control of their respective franchises. Moreover, this also alludes to the possibility of seeing new titles for these popular franchises in the not-too-distant future.
